Govt to resettle flood displaced
The government has taken initiative for the resettlement of flood victims compelled to live under tents by encroaching upon public land.Moti Lal Poudel
As per the provision, the government will be providing alternative settlement to the flood victims while the house and land property destroyed by the mid-August floods will be taken over by the government.
According to chief Thamba Raj Shrestha at the division office of the Department of Urban Development & Building Construction, a technical committee has been formed as per the work policy governing the resettlement of disaster victims.
Shrestha who also happens to be the coordinator of the committee said that they had started collecting data and conducting feasibility studies. Meanwhile, the District Survey Office and District Revenue Office have been handed the responsibility to look for suitable public land to resettle the flood victims.
Shrestha said that the technicians will be conducting a field study to access the damage to the original structures of the victims.
Meanwhile, a police report along with recommendation from the local administration regarding whether the victims or their families have land or properties in their name in other places are being collected as the victim’s property will be transferred to the state once provided with an alternative settlement.
As per the provision, eight to 12 annas of land will be provided to victims living in hilly districts and one to one and a half kattha in tarai and inner tarai areas for the victims in Tarai regions.
The work policy states that government will be liable for constructing a 500 square feet structure with corrugated metal sheet roofs on the provided land, arranging drinking water supply and toilets, drainage, access road and play ground for children.
The flood and landslides following incessant rains in mid-August had displaced about 1,500 households from 34 VDCs including Birendra municipality in the district. There are 4,687 victims from Birendranagar, Satakhani, Lekhparajul, Kunathari, Pokharikanda, Taranga, Tatapani, Hariharpur, Jarbuta, Chinchu, Sahare, Ghatgaun and others living in 24 camps for flood victims in the district.
