Although the District Education Office (DEO), Banke plans to eliminate illiteracy in the district by 2015 through such campaign, more than 60 percent of the peoplae living in 13 VDCs including Udharapur, Raniyapur, Sonpur, Gangapur, Kalaphanta,Katakuiya, Bankatti, Betahani, Piprahawa, Ganapur and Belahari, where the campaign is being run,  are still illiterate, concerned authorities said.

It must be noted that VDCs having higher illiteracy rate predominently consists of people from Muslim and Madhesi communities.

However, the literacy rate of the district stands at a satisfactory 63 percent, according to available data. But the failure of local people to participate in literacy classes run by the government has made the matter worse, DEO officials said.

Local people said that they are failing to attend adult literacy classes due to tremendous workload.

School inspector Uddhav Shrestha said that they have plans to make some 46,000 people in the district literate this year through two-hour long literacy classes run in the district.

The government has set 12 indicators for literacy, which includes ability to read and write letters in national or mother language, write the names of his or her family members including home address,

ability to use a basic calculator and mobile phone, fill up bank vouchers, cheques and have confidence to express oneself in public including reading the calendar.
