Biodiversity conservation: Experts stress on cross-border co-op
Conservationists, experts and development practitioners have stressed on trans-boundary cooperation to achieve global biodiversity conservation targets. The call for such efforts came during a conference of parties meeting at the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) being held in South Korea from October 6. The convention continues till October 17. Addressing a side event on ‘‘Opportunities and Challenges in Conserving Biodiversity in Transboundary Landscapes for Sustainable Development in Hindu Kush Himalayas” on Friday, Bishwa Nath Oli, joint-secretary at the Ministry of Forests and Soil Conservation, said Nepal has been working with neighbouring countries India and China as well as Bhutan to protect biodiversity.
The side event was organised by the ministry along with International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development and the Indian Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change.
“Working collaboratively provides opportunities to implement effective biodiversity conservation tools, like conservation corridors, as is being done in the Kangchenjunga Landscape between Bhutan, India and Nepal,” said Ram Prasad Chaudhary, a Tribhuvan University professor and participant from Nepal.
During the CBD meeting, experts highlighted the need for enhanced collaboration in capacity development, technology transfer, sharing of research data and learning and creation of an enabling policy environment to contribute to global biodiversity conservation.
