Landslips pose threat to Sankhuwasabha villages
Settlements at Tamkhu, Bala, Sisuwakhola, Yaphu and Mangtewa VDCs in the district are exposed to the risk of landslides.Bala VDC Secretary Netra Bahadur Shrestha said 564 families in Bala and more than 150 families of Susuwakhola VDC-2, 5 and 6 are exposed to the risk. While local school, health post and VDC building at risk, the land and houses of the affected families have developed cracks, he said.
He added that residents of Yachamkha of Tamku VDC-8 are living in temporary huts in nearby areas for safety.
Meanwhile, some families of Tamkhu have moved to safer places. The affected families have demanded that they should be relocated at the earliest. One hundred and fifty eight families in the area were displaced due to a landslide last year. Likewise, a landslip had killed 13 people in the area five years ago. A report submitted by an all-party committee, which reached the incident site to asses the disaster last year, states that hundreds of people may be at risk of being swept away if alternative measures are not adopted immediately. The committee also suggested managing resettlement of the affected families.
Lawmakers set up funds
Lawmakers representing Jiri area have decided to provide financial assistance to the victims of landslide in Lincoln Bazaar. The lawmakers—Pashupati Chaulagain, Parbat Gurung, and Ananda Prasad Pokhrel—also established a fund worth Rs 300,000 for the victims. The fund will also be used for Sindhupalchowk landslide victims. Meanwhile, five victims who were injured critically in the Jiri landslide have been referred to Tribhuwan University Teaching Hospital. (PR)
Rs 5.7m given to Jure victims
The District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee on Saturday distributed Rs 5.7 million to the families of people killed in the landslide at Jure in Mankha VDC, Sindhupalchok, to perform last rites of the deceased. Assistant Chief District Officer Dipraj Regmi distributed the relief amount to the families of 13 victims at Pashupati Aryaghat in Kathmandu. He said families of other 143 victims already received Rs 40,000 each. Bodies of 33 people were retrieved from the debris while other 123, who have gone missing, have been declared dead.
