Nepali climber Kami Rita Sherpa, 56, has reached the summit of Mount Everest for a record 32nd time, extending his own record for the highest number of ascents of the world’s tallest peak.
The Department of Tourism said Sherpa reached the summit at 10:12am on Sunday. The successful ascent was confirmed by the department’s field office stationed at Everest Base Camp.
He was leading an expedition operated by 14 Peaks Expedition, according to the department.
Born on January 17, 1970, in Thame of Solukhumbu district, Sherpa first summited Everest in 1994. Over the past three decades, he has become one of the most experienced high-altitude guides working on the mountain, with a career closely tied to commercial Everest expeditions.
The Department of Tourism congratulated Sherpa, saying his achievement reflects a significant contribution to Nepal’s mountaineering sector and its international profile.
“After the successful 32nd ascent, Kami Rita and his team are now descending towards the base camp,” Seven Summit Treks wrote on Facebook. “Preparations are being made in Kathmandu for his grand welcome, while wishing him a safe descent.”
