Blue Water Intelligence (BWI) has marked the operational deployment of its hydrological forecasting and early warning services under the HydroNepal Project at an event in Kathmandu.
Launched in February 2025 with support from the French Ministry of Economy, Finance, Industrial and Digital Sovereignty and funded by FASEP, the project is implemented in partnership with and for the benefit of the Nepal Electricity Authority.
The initiative represents a key collaboration between Nepal and France and brings together expertise from Nepal’s water, energy and research sectors. The event highlighted a year of technical progress and cooperation aimed at strengthening hydropower planning and operations, disaster preparedness and water resource management through the integration of Earth observation, artificial intelligence and hydrological modelling.
Following the successful completion of the development phase, river flow forecasting and early warning systems have become operational in the Upper Karnali, Marsyangdi, Trishuli and Dudh-Koshi river basins. With the systems now live, BWI said it is open to working with Nepal’s private sector to expand the services further.
Speaking at the event, French Ambassador to Nepal Virginie Corteval said it was an honour to see French expertise in hydrological modelling combine with Nepal’s dynamic river systems to support economic growth and disaster preparedness.
BWI hydrologist Anil Khanal said the milestone illustrated the strength of international cooperation and digital innovation in enhancing Nepal’s water and energy resilience.
