The US Embassy in Nepal on Wednesday organised a half-day symposium highlighting the role that the US can play in Nepal to strengthen its democracy and help it attain prosperity.
The event was organised to mark 70 years of US-Nepal bilateral relationship. The academic symposium was organised to discuss the US-Nepal bilateral relationship for the next 70 years and beyond.
Over 250 academics, researchers and journalists attended the half-day symposium. A wide range of issues like building a relationship to boost trade, collaborating on scientific research to tackle public health issues and combating human trafficking were discussed.
The first US official visited Nepal on November 16, 1945. George R Merrell, then chargé d’affaires at New Delhi, presented the Legion of Merit to then Prime Minister Padma Shumshere Jung Bahadur Rana in recognition of the role played by Gurkha soldiers from Nepal in the British Army during the World War II.
On April 25, 1947, an Agreement of Commerce and Friendship was signed in Kathmandu between the US and Nepal.
