One district one product: Eastern districts execute scheme

Eight districts in the eastern region have focused on “One District One Product” programme under the Prime Minister Agriculture Modernisation Project.
With an aim of making the country self-reliant in agriculture and promoting farm modernisation, the government has made an investment of Rs310 million under the project in the region.
For the modernisation of paddy cultivation, the project has run a scheme named “Super Zone” on 1,000 hectares of land in Jhapa, investing Rs44.7million.
According to Regional Agriculture Directorate Officiating Director Rajendra Upreti, farmers involved in the Super Zone programme get assistance from the government in several areas including farm equipment and infrastructure.
In Morang, the government has invested Rs176.8 million for making the district self-sufficient in fish. The government will provide a grant worth Rs300,000 to each farmer for developing a pond spread over one hectare of land. According to Upreti, 500 hectares of land in Morang has been converted into a pond for fish production under the project.
For making Panchthar self-sufficient in cardamom, the government is making an investment of Rs31.3 million. The Regional Agriculture Directorate is planning to increase production of the spice in an additional 500 hectares of land this fiscal year.
Khotang is getting support in maize production with the government making an investment of Rs8.89 million. This has resulted in the addition of 500 hectares of land for maize production.
Saptari is getting Rs 9.89 million for commercial production of mango, while Udaypur and Solukhumbu have focused on commercial production of orange.
For extending orange farming in an additional 1,000 hectares of land, the government has spent Rs18.7 million. Similarly, Sunsari is promoting ginger and turmeric, while Dhankuta is focusing on vegetables.
