The Ministry of Labour and Employment is gearing up to appoint two each labour counsellors and labour attaches for Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain, as the posts will be vacant from March 11.
According to Labour Ministry Spokesperson Bhuwan Prasad Acharya, one counsellor will be appointed for Saudi Arabia and the UAE each, whereas labour attachés will be posted to Nepal’s embassies in Qatar and Bahrain.
Current labour counsellors Ambika Prasad Adhikari and Bhesh Bahadur Karki in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, respectively, will be replaced by new officials.
Appointment of these officials will be done as per the existing Counsellor and Labour Attaché Selection and Appointment Workplan and Standards (2073 BS).
“Candidates for labour counsellors and attachés should have worked with the Labour Ministry or any other agencies under the ministry for at least a year and have a minimum three years experience of government service at the officer’s level,” said Acharya. Besides, they will also have to pass the English proficiency test.
Meanwhile, the ministry has appointed Under-secretary Shiva Ram Pokharel as the labour counsellor for Qatar and section officer Sanmaya Ramtel as the labour attaché at the Nepali Embassy in Malaysia.
The number of such postings varies in Nepali missions abroad. Malaysia, the UAE and Qatar have both labour counsellors and attachés, but South Korea, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Kuwait have only one placement to oversee issues related to labour.
Earlier this fiscal year, the government appointed two labour counsellors and four labour attachés for six countries. Last August, such appointments were made for the Nepali missions in South Korea, Malaysia, the UAE, Oman, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. Dilliram Banstola and Badri Kumar Karki were posted as labour counsellors for South Korea and Malaysia.
Motiram Bhusal, Krishna Kumari Gauli and Gyanendra Sharma were given responsibility of labour attachés for the UAE, Oman and Kuwait, respectively. Raju Kunwar was posted at the Consulate General of Nepal in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
