Five houses were destroyed as a massive fire broke out in Diktel, the district headquarters of Khotang, on Thursday afternoon.
Local residents and security personnel from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepal Army doused the fire at Ratnapark area
in Diktel-2 one and a half hours after it broke out. According to police, houses belonging to Hiralal Puri, Keshav Dahal, Dan Bahadur Magar, Rabidhoj Rai and Harka Bahadur Rai were destroyed in the incident.
Though no human casualty has been reported, the fire destroyed properties worth around Rs 200 million. Police said the inferno could have started from the house of Hiralal Puri due to short circuit. Deputy Superintendent of Police Bidhyananda Majhi said they are investigating into the matter. Locals said though municipality officials mobilised fire engines, they were careless in their work. Raju Shrestha, a local, accused the local body officials of visiting the area in time.
Meanwhile, half a dozen houses were burnt in Sunsari and Saptari districts on Wednesday night. Police said three houses were burnt at Madhuban-8 in Sunsari district.
