Balendra Shah increases lead in Kathmandu
The independent candidate crosses the 10,000 mark leaving UML and Congress candidates behind.Post Report
Balendra Shah, an independent candidate for the mayoral post of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, has continued to amaze those closely following the counting of Friday’s local elections.
On Tuesday, Shah stretched his lead.
As of 11am Tuesday, he has secured 10,797 votes. His closest rival Keshav Sthapit of the CPN-UML is trailing with 5,787 votes.
Nepali Congress’ Sirjana Singh is third with 5,074 votes.
Kathmandu is the biggest metropolitan city with a little over 300,000 eligible voters. As per the election commission, voter turnout in Kathmandu Metropolitan City was around 64 percent, which means around 192,000 votes were cast.
In the deputy mayoral race, UML’s Sunita Dangol is leading with 10,477 votes. Rameshwor Shreshtha of CPN (Unified Socialist) is lagging far behind with 3,048 votes.
