Two young girls died on the spot when a tipper truck hit a motorcycle at Melamchichowk of Sundarijal in Gokarneshwor Municipality in Kathmandu on Wednesday morning.
The sisters, aged four and eight, who were riding pillion with their father Rohan Tamang on a motorcycle were on their way to school when the accident occurred.
According to Superintendent Dinesh Mainali, the two minors died on the spot while their father was injured.
He is undergoing treatment at Nepal Medical College in Attarkhel, said Mainali.
“The tipper truck carrying sand hit the motorcycle,” said Mainali. “The driver absconded but police are searching for him.”
Locals gathered at the accident site soon after the accident demanding the culprit be brought to book and compensation be paid to the victims. As the crowd got unruly, police lobbed a few shells of teargas, said Mainali.
“The situation is under control now,” he said.
