Suicide incidents have risen markedly in Baglung, a hill district of Gandaki Province, in recent years. As per the data available at District Police Office, a total of 62 people died by suicide in the last fiscal year of 2023-24.
The number has steadily increased from 44 in 2021-22 to 53 in the fiscal year of 2022-23. As of mid-April in the current fiscal year of 2024-25, 43 individuals killed themselves. Police Inspector Sunil Chilwal informed that most of the deceased were under 45 years of age, with 11 under the age of 18 and 20 under 25 years.
He emphasised that many of the victims were of productive age, often taking such steps over seemingly minor issues. According to him, economic hardship, relationship issues and lack of mental health awareness are the leading causes behind the alarming rate of suicide.
Dev Prakash Ghimire, an officer of the Provincial Public Health Office in Baglung, said that poor awareness of mental health is driving many to suicide. He said the office began advocacy campaigns and plans to expand them to ward and municipal levels. Health experts stress early intervention and lifestyle improvements, including diet, exercise and emotional support to control suicide cases.
