The 2025 season of the Martyr’s Memorial ‘B’ Division League, Nepal’s second-tier club football competition, concluded on Friday after 91 matches between 14 clubs in a single round-robin format.
The top two clubs on points basis—Planning Boyz United and Shree Bhagawati Club—have been promoted to the top-tier, the A Division League, while the bottom two—Shree Tushal Youth Club and Nayabasti Youth Club—got relegated to the C Division.
Along with the promotion, title-winner Planning Boyz and runner-up Bhagawati also received a cheque of Rs1,500,000 and Rs1,000,000, respectively.
Planning Boyz and Shree Bhagawati played their final league game at Dasharath Rangashala on Friday to conclude their campaign. However, it was only Planning Boyz who ended the league on a high.
Planning Boyz concluded the league without a single defeat. Further, they scored eight goals past Tushal Youth Club on the final day while conceding three.
League’s highest scorer of the season, PBU’s Fagu Ram Tharu scored five goals within the first half against Tushal, while Rambabu Kumar Shah, Om Prakash Chaudhary and Pratap Singh Rai scored one each in the second half.
“It was an amazing day,” Tharu said after the league’s conclusion ceremony. “And an amazing tournament. We will now look forward to the top league,” he added.
Tharu scored 15 goals throughout the league and was awarded a cash prize of Rs50,000 for being the highest scorer.
A total of 244 goals were scored throughout the season, including eight own goals—each by a different player. Excluding own goals, 111 individual players found the back of the net. And Tharu was the only player to have a goal total in double figures.
Tharu was followed by Bhagwati’s Bikrant Narsingh Rana and Bansbari Club’s Sandip Limbu; the duo has seven goals each. Limbu scored the first hat-trick of the season, on Thursday, while Rana reached seven with two goals in their final league game against Saraswoti Youth Club on Friday.
However, Rana’s brace did not suffice. Saraswoti Youth Club bounced back from a score of 1-2 to 3-2 against 10-men Bhagawati. Bhagawati’s Suleman Thapa Magar was shown red after a deliberate foul on the goalkeeper. Saraswoti scored their last two comeback goals in six minutes of additional time.
It was the first loss for Bhagawati. They won seven and drew five of their previous 12 games. On the other, Planning kept their unbeaten streak, winning 10 and drawing three.
Similarly, Planning Boyz’s No 7, Pratap Singh Rai, was adjudged the Most Valuable Player of the season and handed a cash purse of Rs100,000.
On the other hand, Birgunj United’s Pramijay Gachhadar was the Best Goalkeeper of the season. “The tournament did not conclude in our favour, but we will come back stronger,” Gachhadar said after receiving the award on Friday.
Likewise, Boys’ Union Club’s head coach Chandra Bhandari was feted with a ‘Special Recognition’ award for being Nepal’s first top-tier woman coach. Her club finished third, four points below second-positioned Shree Bhagawati.
“We did not have a good start as we played three draws in our first three games,” Bhandari told the Post. “Overall, my team was great and they did their best. We are not happy for falling short of a few points, but it has motivated us to bounce back stronger next season.”
Nonetheless, managers of the two promoted sides echoed that they will now shift their focus to Nepal’s biggest football league, the A Division, which kicks off on December 16.
