Captain Indu Barma’s unbeaten 42 guided Nepal to a four-wicket win over Indonesia in the Asian Games Women’s Qualifiers on Thursday, securing top spot in Group B.
With the victory, Nepal made it two wins in a row after beating China in their opening match and advanced as group winners. They will face hosts Malaysia in the semi-finals. The other semi-final will be played between Group A winners Thailand and China. The top three teams will qualify for the Asian Games to be held in Nagoya, Japan, in October.
Chasing a target of 114, Nepal reached the total with three balls to spare. Barma remained unbeaten on 42 off 43 balls, hitting five fours. Nepal’s chase got off to a shaky start, with openers Samjhana Khadka dismissed for 1 and Puja Mahato for 9. Rubi Podar was out for a duck.
Barma then rebuilt the innings, sharing a 45-run stand for the fourth wicket with Soni Pakhrin, who scored 29 off 36 balls with three fours. She later added 34 runs with Kabita Kunwar, who made 14 off 14 balls before falling.
Ni Ariani struck twice in consecutive deliveries, removing Kabita and Rubina Chhetry, but veteran Sita Rana Magar finished the game in style, hitting three fours in her unbeaten 13 off 6 balls, including the winning boundary.
Earlier, Indonesia posted 113 for 4 in 20 overs after electing to bat. Captain Ni Putu Ayu Nanda Sakarini anchored the innings with an unbeaten 56 off 62 balls, hitting three fours. Indonesia had a poor start, losing both openers cheaply after Kadek Winda Prastini was run out off the second ball and Rahmawati Pangestuti was dismissed for 1 by Manisha Upadhyay.
Sakarini and Ni Luh Dewi rebuilt the innings with a 65-run partnership for the third wicket. Dewi scored 23 off 33 balls with three fours. Ni Made Putri Suwandewi made 12, while Ni Kadek Fitria Rada Rani remained unbeaten on 3.
For Nepal, Manisha Upadhyay took two for 9 from four overs, while Riya Sharma claimed 1 for 17.
