Nepal will face Canada in their second warm-up match of the ICC T20 World Cup in Chennai on Thursday.
Nepal defeated the UAE by seven wickets on Tuesday.
Nepal captain Rohit Paudel will not be available for the team’s second and final warm-up match ahead of the World Cup. The team will take the field under the leadership of vice-captain Dipendra Singh Airee at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk, Chennai.
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has scheduled a “Captains’ Day” interaction with the media in Mumbai on Thursday afternoon, and Rohit is travelling there to attend. Captains from Nepal, India, Afghanistan, Canada, England, Italy, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa, the United States and the West Indies will participate in the event.
Another Captains’ Day event for the remaining teams will be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. India and Sri Lanka are jointly hosting this T20 World Cup. The Nepali team will arrive in Mumbai only on Friday, after playing Canada. Nepal will begin its T20 World Cup campaign against England on Sunday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.
Nepal defeated the UAE on Tuesday thanks to half-centuries from Dipendra and Aarif Sheikh — marking Nepal’s first-ever win in a T20 World Cup warm-up match, despite this being their third appearance in the tournament. Two years ago, during the World Cup in the United States, Canada beat Nepal by 63 runs in a warm-up match in Dallas. Canada, then coached by former Nepal coach Pubudu Dassanayake, scored 187 runs for seven wickets in 20 overs, while Nepal were all out for 120 in 19.3 overs. Canada later defeated Ireland. Pubudu is now coaching the United States.
Nepal qualified for this T20 World Cup by winning all six matches in the Asia–East Asia Pacific regional qualifiers. Canada also secured qualification by winning all six of their matches in the Americas region. Canada is led by captain Dilpreet Bajwa, who is yet to captain the side in an official match. The squad includes three former captains — Saad Bin Zafar, Nicholas Kirton, and Navneet Dhaliwal. Zafar and Kirton previously visited Kathmandu to play in the Nepal Premier League.
Canada lost their first warm-up match in Chennai by 10 runs to Italy. They will open their T20 World Cup campaign against South Africa in Ahmedabad on Monday.
