Police win women’s cricket gold
Chhetry’s team defeat arch-rivals APF Club by five runs in the women’s T20 cricket final.Sports Bureau
Nepal Police Club secured cricket’s both gold medals at the Ninth National Games after the women’s team defeated arch rivals Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club in the women’s Twenty20 final by five runs in Pokhara on Tuesday.
The men’s team of Police had won the gold medal on September 16 in Kathmandu defeating Tribhuvan Army Club by eight wickets.
On Tuesday, Police elected to bat first and posted 89-4 before they defended a low total, restricting the opponents to 84-7.
Police’s innings was largely built on opener Kajal Shrestha’s 27 runs, the highest of the game, in her patience knock of 55 balls. She hit a boundary before being run out by Rekha Rawal.
Samjhana Khadka also made a decent contribution of 25-ball 21 while Kabita Joshi remained unbeaten on 13 facing 10 deliveries. Kabita Kunwar scored 11 and captain Rubina Chhetry hit eight.
APF bowler Nary Thapa, , Indu Barma and captain Sita Rana Magar picked one wicket each.
Chasing the target, APF made a shaky start to their innings and lost wickets on regular interval. Openers Jyoti Pandey and captain Rana Magar were dismissed on seven runs each while Indu Barma, the number three batter, departed for two.
Roma Thapa, who came to bat at number six, contributed the innings' highest 19-ball 26 before she was run out. Rajmati Airee was the other player to touch double digit figures remaining unbeaten on 12 runs.
Police bowler Ishwori Bist, who dismissed captain Rana Magar and Barma, was the pick of the bowling. She conceded 20 runs in her four-over spell. Captain Chhetry, Sangita Rai and Hiranmayee Roy shared a wicket each. Bista was named the player-of-the-match while APF’s Nary Thapa was declared the player-of-the-series.
Bagmati secured bronze in the event defeating Lumbini by seven wickets in the third-place playoffs. Put to bat first, Lumbini garnered 87-9 on the back of 36-ball 30 by captain Saraswati Ganga Magar. Sushmita Bhusal contributed 12 runs.
Bagmati bowler Bipish Shahi, named the player-of-the-match, pocketed four wickets in her four-over bowling conceding 23 runs while Khusi Dangol took two wickets.
Chasing the target, Suman Khatiwada smashed an unbeaten 21-ball 41 and opener Ashmita Kharel contributed 32-ball 20 as Bagmati made 89-3.
Kanchan Shrestha and Anish Majhakoti contributed 10 runs each with the latter remaining unbeaten.
Lumbini bowler Kritika Marasini claimed two wickets while Sushmita Bhusal took one.
