Police edge Army to pull off second straight victory

A four-wicket haul from Karan KC gave Nepal Police Club a four-wicket victory over departmental rivals Tribhuvan Army Club while Lokesh Bam cracked half century in the Nepal Armed Police (APF) Club's seven-wicket victory over the Bagmati Province, as both the winning sides pulled second in the Prime Minister Cup National Twenty20 cricket tournament in Kirtipur on Tuesday.
In the day's opening game held at TU grounds, Army were bowled out for 137 runs with a ball to spare after being sent to bat first. Chasing the target, Police scored 141-6 with two overs to spare as Yogendra Singh Karki smashed a boundary to Jitendra Mukhiya for winning runs.
With the win, Police climbed on top of Group 'A' standings with four points winning both of the matches played while Army, who edged Karnali in their opening match on Monday, have two points and are second on the table.
Army opener Sompal Kami scored 35-ball 42 that included six fences. Captain Binod Bhandari was the highest scorer of the innings as he cracked 44 off 33 with three boundaries and sixes each. Opener Hari Chauhan, Kushal Malla and tailender Sushan Bhari were other players to contribute in double digits with the trio scoring 12 runs apiece.
Pacer Karan KC ripped apart Police batters with four wickets and two catches under his belt. The player-of-the-match gave away 17 runs in his four-over spell. Gulsan Jha and Karki picked two wickets each.
Chasing the target, opener Kushal Bhurtel scored 35 off 22 for Police comprising five fours and a six. Lower middle order batter Rashid Khan contributed 28 off 19, Dilip Nath remained not out on ball-a-run 25. Anil Shah played a quickfire knock of 11-ball 22 while Aarif Sheik contributed 10 runs.
Shahab Alam was the pick of the Army bowling claiming three wickets in his four-over spell conceding 16 runs. Mukhiya grabbed two wickets.
In Group 'B' match at the same venue, Bam played a quickfire knock of 24-ball 50 for APF as they chased a moderate target of 126 runs for the loss of three wickets in 18.4 overs. Earlier, batting first former national captain Gyanendra Malla-led Bagmati were restricted to 125-8 at close.
Bagmati openers Ishan Pandey and Subash Khakurel contributed 29 runs and 21 runs. Pandey, the highest scorer of the innings hit 24-ball 29 before he was trapped leg before by captain Sharad Vesawkar. Nandan Yadav (16-ball 24) and Aadil Khan (22-ball 19) were the other major contributors of the innings. Captain Malla was out for six runs.
APF's medium pacer Abinash Bohara was the pick of bowling claiming four wickets. He gave away 32 runs in his four-over bowling. Kamal Airee pocketed two wickets.
In the run chase, Bam, who came to bat at number three, hit 50 off 24 deliveries. The player-of-the-match He clobbered 10 fences and a six before he was caught by Aadil Khan of Pratis GC. Opener Pradeep Airee was not out on 36 runs off 54 deliveries. He hit four fences. Sundeep Jora was not out on 15 runs while Aasif Sheikh contributed 12 runs.
Bagmati bowlers Ramnaresh Giri, Rijan Dhakal and Pratis GC claimed one wicket each.
At the Mulpani grounds, Karnali province opened accounts in Group 'A' table after the second match with a 31-run win over Province 1. Invited to bat first, Karnali posted a paltry total of 120-7 before they bowled out Province 1 for 89 runs in 17.5 overs.
Karnali opener cum captain Rabindra Shahi contributed 36 runs off 41 that included four fences. Prakash Jaishi (28-ball 25) and Raj Shahi (13-ball 15) were other major contributors in the low scoring pitch.
Province 1 bowler Mukund Yadav grabbed three wickets while Firdosh Ansari pocketed two wickets.
Province 1 made a poor start to their run chase losing five wickets for 15 runs on the board. Lower middle order batter Ansari hit 23 runs while Dipesh Kandel and Srawan Yadav scored 15 runs each. Captain Siddhant Lohan scored 14 runs.
Player-of-the-match Anuj Chunara was the pick of Karnali bowling claiming four wickets in his 3.5 overs bowling giving away 16 runs. Diwan Pun took two wickets.
Province 2 pulled their first win in Group 'B' with a two-wicket victory over Gandaki Province. Province 2, defeated by APF in their opening game, have two points after two matches while Gandaki lost their first match of the campaign.
Opting to bat first, Gandaki made 116-7 at close riding on 41 runs from Arjun Kumal. He hit six fours facing 39 deliveries and was declared player-of-the-match despite his side losing the game. Sandeep Chhetri contributed 27 off 24 while opener Anil Gurung and Bipk Karki scored 10 runs each. Karki remained not out. Province 2 bowler Mohammad Aadil Alam picked two wickets.
In the run chase, Province 2 opener Santosh Karki hit 23 off 21 while captain Hasim Ansari contributed 26 off 27. Hari Krishna Jha (17 runs), Harishankar Shah (12 runs) and Bibek Yadav (10 runs) were other contributors.
Gandaki bowlers Krishna Poudel claimed three wickets while Bishal Paudel and Subash Bhandari secured two wickets each.
There won't be any game on Wednesday while four matches are scheduled for Thursday.
