Floods and landslides kill 15 people in two days. Three missing, 21 injured

At least 15 people have lost their lives, three have gone missing and 21 others have been injured in incidents of floods and landslides triggered by incessant rains across the country since Saturday.
According to the Nepal Police headquarters, 15 people from Koshi, Bagmati, Gandaki and Lumbini provinces were killed in incidents of water-induced disasters as of Sunday evening.
According to police spokesperson Dan Bahadur Karki, Gandaki Province was the worst hit by heavy rains in the two days. According to him, three people were missing. Sixty houses were inundated and over 150 people displaced in rain-induced incidents.
Among the missing are a man from Belaka-3 of Udaypur district, a girl at Simta of Surkhet and a woman from Bhirkot of Syangja district.
Three people each were buried to death at Biruwa Municipality-6 of Syangja and Shuklagandaki-7 of Tanahun. Two people were killed at Karkineta Phalewas of Parbat in a landslide.
According to police, floods took two lives at Lamahi and Rajpur of Dang and a man was killed at Mathagadhi of Palpa. Likewise, two people at Roshi of Kavre and one individual at Nagarjun of Kathmandu were killed, according to police.
Incessant rains over the past few days affected daily life nationwide on Sunday as well. Scores of families have been displaced while several highways and road sections were obstructed due to floods and landslides triggered by monsoon rains across the country.
In Darchula, 60 families were shifted to safer locations as the flooded Seti river entered settlements in Dungad of Sigas Rural Municipality-5. Chief District Officer Bhimkant Sharma said the displaced people were shifted to the building of the local Sharada Secondary School. According to him, several settlements on the river banks in wards 5, 6 and 7 of Sigas are prone to flooding.
Meanwhile, water flow in the Mahakali river increased significantly on Sunday. According to Deputy Superintendent of Police in Kanchanpur Umesh Joshi, water flow in the river measured 185,450 cusec at 3pm. The water level is expected to go higher as the rain continues in the area.
Three settlements in Dodhara Chandani Municipality-10 were inundated as the floods in the Mahakali and Jogbudha rivers entered the settlements on Sunday. “The floods inundated our area. We came to the safe house built by the security personnel,” said Basanti Budha of Kutiyabhar of Dodhara Chandani-10.
In Achham, nine families were displaced in a massive landslide at Seripakha of Chaurpati Rural Municipality-6. The displaced families are taking shelter in the building of the community health unit.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Ishwori Prasad Bhandari, 48 people of nine families have been shifted to a safer place.
In Kailali, several settlements in Ward 7 of Kailari Rural Municipality have been inundated. The floods in the Mohana river entered Rampur, Bhuiphata, Badka Basanta, Narayanpur and Rantanpur settlements. “Hectares of paddy field have been inundated,” said Maiya Chaudhary, agriculture unit chief in Kailari Rural Municipality.
In Dadeldhura, Nabaraj Paneru, aged 56, died in a landslide in Parashuram Municipality-3 on Saturday. A landslide buried him while he was cleaning an intake of a drinking water project.
According to the Traffic Police Office in Dhangadhi, various road sections in Dadeldhura, Doti, Baitadi, Bajhang, Achham and Bajura districts in Sudurpaschim Province have been disrupted due to landslides and floods triggered by incessant rains. “Efforts are on to resume transport but continuous rainfall has caused problems,” said Superintendent of Police Rajib Basnet.
In Bardiya, a woman from Madhuwan Municipality-5 went missing after being swept away by a flooded stream in the Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary in India. According to police, Shanti Khadka was swept away by the rain-swollen stream as she went to the bordering Indian forest to collect fiddlehead fern and mushroom.
The flooded Babai river started eroding the embankment in Gulariya Municipality-11. “There is no immediate threat as the water level in the river has started receding. Efforts are on to repair the embankment,” said Chief District Officer of Bardiya Rudradevi Sharma.
Meanwhile, hundreds of passengers were stranded as the floods and landslides disrupted several highways and road sections in various places across the country. Transport resumed on some road sections while many roads, mainly the rural ones, are still blocked.
A landslide in Bagmati Rural Municipality of Lalitpur blocked the Kanti Highway. Police said floods in Makalu and Bhotkhola rural municipalities have also obstructed the Koshi Highway in Sankhuwasabha.
Similarly, a landslide in Barahakshetra Municipality-1 of Sunsari district blocked the Chatara-Barahakshetra road.
In Rasuwa, the Syabrubesi-Thambuchet road section has been blocked due to a landslide in Aamachhodingmo Rural Municipality-5, according to police.
A mudslide in Ichchhakamana Rural Municipality-3 of Chitwan reduced traffic to one-way operation on the Prithvi Highway.
The Bhimphedi-Kathmandu-Hetauda road is operating one-way due to a landslide in Bhimphedi Rural Municipality-4, Makawanpur. Another mudslide in ward 8 of the same rural municipality has resulted in one-way traffic on the Kanti Highway.
The BP Highway is operating with one-way traffic due to a landslide in Roshi Rural Municipality of Kavre.
The Chame-Besisahar road section has been blocked due to flooding in Chame Rural Municipality of Manang.
The Beni-Darbang road is blocked due to a landslide in Beni Municipality-4 of Myagdi, while the Beni-Jomsom road has become impassable after a landslide in Kushma Municipality of Parbat district.
Police said travellers are facing hardships as the Muldhunga-Beni road and Siddhartha Highway are accommodating only one-way traffic. After a landslide in Myagde Rural Municipality of Tanahun, the Prithvi Highway stretch is no longer spacious enough for two-way traffic. The Kaligandaki Corridor in Nawalparasi East and the Mid Hill Highway in Baglung are blocked by landslides.
In Pyuthan, the Syauliwa-Bagdula and Bhalubang-Pyuthan roads have been blocked due to floods and landslides.
In Palpa, the Siddhartha Highway, the Tamghas-Butwal road, and Kaligandaki Corridor allow for one-way traffic only.
The Ridi-Baglung road section, Kaligandaki Corridor, and Madan Bhandari Highway have been obstructed in Gulmi.
Likewise, the Gorusinge-Sandhikharka and Palpa-Arghakhanchi roads were blocked by landslides.
A mudslide has blocked the Shahid Highway in Rolpa, while the Ghorahi-Tulsipur road section in Dang has been reduced to one-way traffic.
Karnali Highway is blocked in Kalikot due to a landslide. The Sanfe-Martadi road in Achham, Jaya Prithvi Highway in Baitadi, and Bhimdatta Highway in Dadeldhura have been completely blocked.
According to Nepal Police, the Bajhang-Khodpe road section in Baitadi and the Sanfe-Martadi road section in Bajura are operating with one-way traffic.
