Master Shoko and Margarita, a Japanese solo theatre performance featuring Shoko Ito, who is a Japanese director, playwright, and actor, is ready to be staged for the Kathmandu audience.
Inspired by the acclaimed Russian novel The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Buglakov, the play tells the story of Shoko who meets Yura at Berlin airport. In the unfolding of the play, the audiences witness a tale of unrequited love which has elements of fantasy that is contrasted with ideas of secularism, according to the press note released by the Embassy of Japan, one of the organisers of the play in Nepal.
The staging is organised by the Embassy along with Theatre Village and Kunja Theatre.
The press note further adds that the play will be an opportunity for the Nepali audience to seep in into Japanese theatre tradition to be presented by an experienced theatre artist.
Ms Ito, an award winning artist, has over 30 years of theatre experience under her belt with performances in 62 countries around the world. Master Shoko and Margarita will be Ito’s second performance in Nepal. In 2016, she had staged Samurai Grandmother, which was also a solo performance.
The play will be staged twice: The first staging will be held on 23 March at the premises of Nepal Tourism Board, Brikutimandap, and another on 24 March at the premise of Kunja Theatre, Baneshwor.
While the first performance will host audience based on invitation only, the second performance will be free for the general audience.
