Rai, Sherpa, Ghising qualify for Asia leg

All three Nepali junior golfers earned tickets to the Asia Final after winning their respective age-group categories in the sixth Faldo Series Nepal Championships at the par-72 Gokarna Golf Club on Wednesday. Rai won the overall title as well as the boys’ U-21 category with three-round total of 11-over 227 after carding four-over 76 on Wednesday. Rai finished 10 strokes ahead of his closest rival Bipin Tamang, who shot third straight seven-over 79 for a total of 21-over 237.
Sherpa won the girls’ title with a total score of 14-over 230 after a third round card of four-over 76. Kashmira Shah finished in a distant second at 267. Shah shot a 91. Ghising claimed the boys’ U-16 age-group category, recording a narrow one-stroke win over Indian golfer Mohnish Y Shah. Ghising shot four-over 76 for a total score of 16-over 232 while Mohnish carded one-over 73 in the final round.
Rai shot two-over 38 on both halves. Rai opened the day with a birdie and added another shot on the fourth hole. But he dropped a shot on the second and had a triple bogey on the eighth. On his way back, Rai dropped shots on the 15th and 17th holes.
Sherpa carded one-over 37 on the front nine and three-over 39 on the back nine. Sherpa dropped shots on the second, eighth and ninth holes against birdies on the fourth and seventh hole. On the back nine, she dropped shots on the 10th, 12th, 14th and 17th against a birdie on the final hole.
Ghising shot even-par 36 on the front nine and four-over 40 on the back nine. He dropped a shot on the second but made amends by sinking in a birdie on the fourth hole. On the back nine, Ghising sank a birdie on the 10th and had bogeys on the 14th and 17th holes to add to a triple bogey on the 15th.
In all, 23 junior golfers took part in the three-day tournament organised by Nepal Golf Association and Gokarna Forest Resort. Nepal Olympic Committee president Jeevan Ram Shrestha and Nepal Golf Association President Tashi Ghale among others gave away the prizes.
