“The purpose of the discussion group is to evaluate popular culture,” said Prashant Das of Ka Baata, one of the co-coordinators of the reading group.
Helena Asha Knox, the founder of Kaalo 101 said that anyone is welcome in the discussion series.
This coming week, the group will be discussing Stuart Hall’s essay, What is this Black, based on the black popular culture. “The selected readings are not a part of present national discourse, but are relevant to the Nepali context,” Knox told the Post.
Last week’s reading was a chapter from Michel Foucault’s The History of Sexuality, and according to Das, the discussion group saw the presence of youths who are engineers, architects, and artists.
The discussion is rooted in the Socratic method, where no one is moderating the conversation and the organisers hope to foster a vibrant space where people will come together to wrestle with ideas in order to have a more nuanced understanding of the issues at hand.
The discussion is free of cost and will begin at 11.00 on December 2 at the premises of Kaalo 101 in Patan.
