After completing its theatrical run in the US and Europe, the film White Sun (Seto Surya) is set to be re-released in theatres in Kathmandu. Directed by Deepak Rauniyar, White Sun is Nepal’s official entry for the category of Best Foreign Film at the Academy Awards.
Marking the first anniversary of its release, the film will re-release in multiplexes around the city on December 8.
White Sun was one of the most venerated Nepali films of 2016. The film won several awards at the international film circuit, including Inter-film Award at the Venice Film Festival and Best Film Award at the Singapore International Film Festival. The film also took in the Best Director Award at the recently-held award function organised by Film Critics’ Society of Nepal.
White Sun tells the story of two brothers who fought for two different sides at Nepal’s ten-year long insurgency. In doing so, the film, as one reviewer put it, “manages the difficult balance of blending the individual with the universal—intensely intimate in focus, but ultimately going beyond the specific circumstances of its depiction to reveal broader truths and insight.”
White Sun features actors Dayahang Rai, Rabindra Singh Baniya, Aasha Magrati, Sumi Malla and Amrit Pariyar. White Sun was premiered at KIMFF 2016.
