Society, an urban art exhibition featuring the works of German street artist Niklas Schwede, opened at Evoke Café & Bistro, in the Capital on Wednesday. The week-long exhibition features artworks which, in the words of the artist, portray the inner reflections of the society through mind and the subconscious.
“The paintings are not about a particular society, but the reflection of the society seen through individual lenses. Society is not a concrete object, instead it is a highly subjective notion,” said the 22-year-old artist, “With these paintings I have tried to explore the relationships between individuals, among themselves, and with the society.”
Schwede primarily creates murals travelling to different cities around the world. Just two months ago, he created over 60 murals in Pokhara, and also exhibited his paintings in the city. After his show in Kathmandu, he will travel to Benaras, in India.
The exhibition is part of the Artist Gallery Series, which was introduced by Sattya Media Arts Collective in September. Schwede is the second artist to be featured in the series which promotes independent artists from not only Nepal but from across the world. Off? Society will have on display a total of 25 works, based on five different designs, and every art work will also be up for sale.
The exhibition will conclude on November 1.
