Birgunj-based Bhojpuri Samaj has founded a 51-member committee to honour Pandit Deep Narayan Mishra, one of the most prominent writers in the Bhojpuri language. Author Mishra, who has nine published works to his credit, will be taken to a chariot-ride around Birgunj on Saturday where he will be felicitated by different organisations like Marwadi Samaj and Barnawal Samaj along the way.
Eighty-two year old Mishra is considered the Bard of Bhojpuri linguistics and literature. Mishra started out by teaching the Bhojpuri language, which he left after he retired in 1993. Since then, Mishra has to his credit nine works of Bhojpuri literature—Ajaamil epic, poetry collections Ajurike Phool and Phooljhari, and Hindi poetry anthology Utsarga, among others—while nine other works are slated for publication. Mishra has also composed articles on Nepali literature and Newari culture.
