Manisha to work for relief
Bollywood actress Manisha Koirala has announced that she will advocate for pregnant women, new mothers and infants, girls and young people displaced by the earthquakeThe UN agency has claimed that more than two million women of reproductive age have been affected by the disaster. It has also warned that an estimated 126,000 women who are currently pregnant may need urgent care to ensure that they deliver their babies safely and remain healthy.
“I am happy to renew my partnership with the UNFPA in my homeland at this crucial time,” said Koirala. “The UNFPA’s lifesaving interventions are needed more than ever now.”
Women and girls who have been living in temporary camps are also at risk of gender-based violence.
“We are grateful to Manisha for her dedication and commitment. We look forward to working together strategically both now and in the future,” said Giulia Vallese, UNFPA representative in Nepal.
Reproductive health kits from the UNFPA are being distributed to health facilities and medical teams throughout the country.
Additionally, the organisation has also been sending out ‘dignity kits’ to the affected areas. A ‘dignity kit’ includes sanitary pads, a flashlight and new clothes.
“I am struck by the impact of the organisation’s work in several of the most-affected districts,” said Koirala.
