A widow’s struggle on canvas
Sarwanam Theatre, Kalikasthan, is currently hosting an art exhibition titled Tuli by Shailesh Gurung, an artist from Bhairahawa.Gurung is more familiar working with oil, acrylic and pastels, but frequently uses water colours as a painting medium.
The water-coloured figurative paintings in the collection are based on the real-life story of a widow. Tuli, who lost her husband during the time of the insurgency, was left to fend for her child and herself. As the story goes, Tuli was discriminated in her village and as last resort, she relocated to Kathmandu to run a grocery shop.
“I spent time talking to her and was inspired by her resilience,” said Gurung, who will also contribute twenty percent of the sales of his artwork to Tuli.
Promoted by the Terai Development Forum, the exhibit also features serene scenes from the artist’s village in Tarai. Gurung, through his art, wants to promote and provide exposure to his people from back home.
The series aims to make people understand the problems that widows routinely face in our country even now and spread awareness about it.
The exhibition is open till January 11
