Street Theatre Day celebrated
Sarwanam Theatere celebrated the 32nd edition of Street Theatre Day at its theatre hall in Kalikasthan by staging the play Hami Basanta Khojirahechau on Friday. The play, which raises the issues of freedom and democracy, was well-received by the youths back then. And its relevance is felt even now although the country has already transformed into a federal democratic nation.
During the programme, Malla, the founder of the Sarwanam theatre group, spoke on why he ventured into producing street plays in those difficult times when freedom of speech did not exist. The theatre group was successful in proving that it was possible to stage such plays among the common people—even without having a sophisticated theatre hall— in the form of street plays: without proper props and lighting. Also speaking on the occasion, Om Mani Sharma a veteran theatre artist, recounted the bitter experiences that he had when performing street plays during the Panchayat days.
To promote the medium, every September 5, the country celebrates Street Theatre Day. During this year’s celebrations, actors Ram KC, Ramesh Khadka, Mina Khakda, Kaushal Pandit, Shyam Khadka, Sadhana Bhandari, Arjun Nepupane and Raj Shah took part in the play, in which Om Mani Sharma played one of the lead parts.
