A dedicated achiever
Biswas Dhakal is a noted figure in the field of Information Technology. What do you do when you have time for yourself?
I try to manage as much time as possible for my family. I have a five-year-old daughter and love talking to her and playing with her whenever I am free. Most of my hours are occupied and dedicated to work, though. Even when I'm not working, I am often sketching work plans and researching.
Do you travel a lot?
Whenever I'm out on a business trip, it's my work I focus on so I don't really get any time to explore new places during such trips. I enjoy travelling with my family, though. I can unwind and relax and get to spend quality time with my wife and daughter. Pokhara is one of my favourite locations. It is such a beautiful city. I also like Nagarkot; the scenery and views from there are amazing. And I love oceans and beaches; I'd really like to visit the Maldives with my family someday.
Do you look up to anyone as a source of inspiration?
I think there are many things to learn from each individual. And for me, the biggest sources of inspiration have been my family members. My parents have always inspired my siblings and me to do things on our own, to develop independent interests and work hard. I think they have inspired us all to create jobs instead of just working for someone else. My mother and father have always been there and have been behind all the decisions I've made so far in my life.
What about your interests? Say films, books…
I like watching movies and I watch at least one or two new releases each month. I watched 2 States very recently. If there's a film being screened in theatres in the city about team building—a film like Chak De! for instance—then I try to go and watch it with my entire team. Talking about actors, I really like Aamir Khan. I think he is a brilliant actor and his films are always interesting. I'm also really fond of Katrina Kaif.
As far as books go, I'm not much of a reader. The thing I end up reading most often is the Harvard Business Review.
What about food?
I love cooking and I usually help my wife in the kitchen. I usually reach home after 8:30 and I often go directly to the kitchen to cook. I never tire of cooking. My family and friends say that my biryanis and chicken are good. But when it comes to my taste, I love eating mutton. Even though it's not supposed to be healthy for everyone, I hope I can continue eating mutton forever.
Do you have any regrets in life?
Not at all. Sometimes I do feel like I've not been able to give enough time to my wife and daughter because I'm so busy with work but I try to make up for that as much as possible. There were times when I could seldom reach home early enough to meet my daughter. She would be asleep by the time I finished work and I would have to go without seeing her for days. I then started telling her stories every day so that she would wait for me, even when I was late, just so she
could listen to my stories. My wife is very supportive, so it has not been difficult for me to balance work and family life this far.
I believe that when you want to do something in your life, you should also be able to sacrifice certain things to make sure you devote your energies to your ultimate goal. You need to learn to prioritise as you won't be able to manage time for all your interests. I used to be very fond of cricket when I was younger but it's been ages that I've watched a match. I believe life is all about being happy with what you have and moving ahead.
What would you be doing if you were not in the IT sector?
I've not really thought about that. I have been fascinated by computers since the time I was in school. I took up computer science as one of my optional subjects when I was in secondary school. Since then, I have not thought about my other career interests at all. I will definitely try to do new things in the future but these will again be related to the IT field.
What do you have to say to the young, aspiring entrepreneurs?
I believe that any person with the will and ambition to succeed must first set his visions and goals and be certain about them. You should never have second or third options, in my opinion. Just do one thing, but do it with such dedication and passion that there is no room for failure. It is important to work with focus and dedication. Since everything is moving at such a fast pace, success is all about getting out there and grasping all the opportunities available to you.
