Ever since Malvika Subba was crowned Miss Nepal in the year 2002, there has been no stopping for the talented beauty.Ekantipur Report
You’ve always got such a packed schedule. What takes up most of your time these days?
At the moment, I’m more involved in choreography and training, as well as hosting. I’ve just finished the Trendsetters Fashion Tour, was part of a concert at the Belbari Mahotsav, moderated Amnesty International’s My Body My Rights, and was part of the recently held Women in Concert. I’m also working on a couple of projects related to the Hamri Bahini Enterprise.
Considering all these, do you ever get time to just sit back and relax? What do you do when you have some days off?
I don’t really get days off, to be honest; I’m usually working on Saturdays and other holidays too. But if I do get some time off, I like to pamper myself—go to the salon,
get my hair and nails done, that sort of thing. I also enjoy just lazing about at home, watching the telly, or catching up with my girlfriends and going on picnics.
Do you watch a lot of films? What kind do you prefer?
I’m more inclined towards rom-coms and off-beat cinema. I don’t have any favourite flicks or stars, though....there’s a lot to like out there, and everyone has something to offer.
What about food? Do you have any favourite, last-meal-on-earth type dishes?
I am definitely a foodie, but I’m not overly adventurous. I generally stick to what I know and love. It can sometimes take me years to change restaurants or get used to a certain kind of cuisine. I remember I’d tried experimenting with street food in Hong Kong once, and suffered severe diarrhoea for a couple of days. If I had to pick my last meal on earth, it would be a mix of all the cuisines I love: Newari, Italian and Thakali.
You’re always dressed and made-up so impeccably. What are you most obsessive about when shopping?
I’m very particular about what beauty products I buy, and sometimes shoes as well. Besides these, I’m fine buying things right off the street. I use foundations and compacts by Clinique, Kryolan for make-up bases for when I have to go on stage, and Isadora for eyeliner and mascara. I like M.A.C cosmetics too. But because most of these aren’t available in Nepal, I have to either get them when I’m overseas or ask someone to bring them in for me. Thankfully, Kryolan now has an official distributor in Kathmandu, so that’s made things easier. As for shoes, I want them to be both beautiful and comfortable, which is a big ask when you’re
looking for high heels. I generally buy Charles and Keith products, or, if it’s summer and I want to wear flats, I opt for Dulla shoes.
Is there anyone you look up to as a source of inspiration?
Of course I do, I feel everyone should have someone or the other that can inspire them, motivate them to be better. But I don’t have a specific individual; I look up to anyone and everyone who is strong and independent, whether it be man or woman. These include my friends, people I work with, or just someone I’ve seen on TV. I see qualities that I like in everyone around me.
What would you say is your biggest nightmare?
Given the number of domestic flights that meet with accidents in Nepal, going down in one of those planes is my absolute biggest fear right now. I used to be deathly afraid of snakes, but really, they’re nothing in comparison to the kind of safety issues that plague Nepali airlines, that’s for sure.
Which animal do you think you resemble the most?
Hmm..I’ve actually never thought about this one, but maybe a tigress? That’s what my husband says anyway, because of how fierce and protective I can be. (Laughs)
Is there anything at all that you’d want to change about yourself?
At this moment in time, in my early 30s, I’ve sort of found a real balance in life—I’m very much at peace with myself, who I am as a person. Of course, that doesn’t mean I don’t have my own little issues to do with my body...I’d definitely want to lose some weight. I don’t mean that I want to get skinny or anything like that, but healthier, more fit, in any case.
What’s next for you?
I’m hoping I can someday open of my own training school, and do more choreography work in pageants. Besides these, my other social activities will go on full steam, so it’s going to be busy, busy, busy, as always.
