‘In-Between Two Worlds’ merges abstraction and figurative paintings
A collaborative exhibition at the Nepal Art Council explores themes of spirituality, devotion and self-expression through the works of artists Shivangini Rana and Chirag Bangdel.Post Report
A collaborative art exhibition, ‘In-Between Two Worlds’, featuring two Nepali artists, Chirag Bangdel and Shivangini Rana, is taking place at The Nepal Art Council.
Rana is a contemporary abstract artist who uses layers to express the emotional depth of her paintings. Bangdel is a Kathmandu-based visual artist whose prominent contribution to ‘In-Between Two Worlds’ is his ongoing series, ‘Geeta Govinda’.
As both artists seek to portray spirituality and love through their artworks, the collaborative pieces feel naturally balanced. Bangdel says, “After the Maoist insurgency, I felt a deep urge to express love through art; that is when the religious figures of love, Radha and Krishna, came to my mind.” ‘Geeta Govinda’ explores love through religious figures of Hinduism.
Similarly, the painting itself, ‘In Between Two Worlds’, is a collaborative work created through the joint efforts of Bangdel and Rana. As its title suggests, the painting reflects a meeting point between the spiritual realm and the material world.
Rana shares, “I originally began this work four years ago. This particular blend of my abstract style with Chirag’s figurative symbols is meant to express an act of homage to the divine; you could also see it as two horses praying together.”
