On Tuesday, The Story Kitchen (TSK) and Sandhan, in collaboration with Tribhuvan University’s Gender Studies Department, launched their recent publication, ‘Mahila Andolan Ko Sahakhoji: Sandhan Sangraha Shrinkhala 1’.
The book is a compilation of articles on various aspects of Nepal’s feminist movement, written by 21 authors in collaboration with 12 mentors, all experts in the field of feminism studies in Nepal.
The book attempts to tackle the understanding of the movement through cultural, socio-ethnic, economic, political and various other lenses.
The event hosted over 200 participants, including the authors, mentors and prominent figures of the Nepali civil society. It was chaired by TSK’s Chair Executive Jaya Luitel, along with the Chair of the Women’s Commission, Kamala Parajuli, former minister Hisila Yami, Tribhuvan University’s Dean of Humanities and Social Studies Kusum Shakya, along with the Gender Studies Department Head Sudeep Nakarmi.
Nakarmi first addressed the audience by focusing on the book's diverse viewpoints: “Looking at any part of society in isolation cannot explain its importance. The same is true for the feminist movement. This book focuses on the various perspectives of gender dynamics in Nepal.”
He added that, unlike many academic pieces written in Nepal, this text is not just targeted at experts but also focuses equally on everyday life and ground reality.
Sociologist and writer Meena Paudel added, “It is important to remember that the next generation's involvement in the women’s rights movement is gradual. While this text is a great step towards that, it can be built on even more.”
She highlighted the need for social transformation regarding women’s rights in Nepal. Bindu Pokharel, from the Department of Gender Studies at Tribhuvan University, commented on how women have the most critical voice in their experiences and problems and that this book, written exclusively by women, is a big step.
Remarks from Women’s Commission chair Parajuli and TSK chair Luitel concluded the event. Luitel also announced that more ‘Mahila Aandolan Ko Sahakhoji’ installations are being planned.
The book is now available, and reading it on Sandhan’s website will give readers even more information on this project.
