The Department of Social Work (DSW) at Padmakanya Multiple Campus (PKMC) is hosting the ‘Barbie in the Red Land’ event today to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child.
According to the organisers, the event aims to empower young girls, raise awareness about the social challenges they face and advocate for their fundamental rights. Under the theme ‘Breaking the Barriers’, the event signifies a departure from conventional pink associations to the significance of red in Hindu mythology, symbolising bravery and menstruation. The programme emphasises the critical importance of menstrual health and hygiene in empowering young girls.
‘Barbie in the Red Land’ will address recurring social issues affecting girls, empowering them to overcome challenges they encounter. By challenging menstrual stereotypes, the organisers want to sensitise youth, particularly girls, fostering a more inclusive and understanding society.
The event will host notable speakers from diverse fields. Deputy Mayor of Kathmandu, Sunita Dangol, will talk about the vital role of local government in supporting girls' rights. Miss Nepal 2019, Anushka Shrestha, will share her experiences regarding challenges and opportunities for young girls in Nepal. Media personality Oshin Sitaula will discuss how media shapes perceptions and tackles gender-based inequalities.
Additionally, experts from the development sector will offer valuable insights into challenges and solutions related to girls' empowerment.
