Flood alert issued for six rivers across Nepal until Wednesday
Department of Hydrology and Meteorology urges caution as flash flood risk remains high in several districts
Post Report
The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has issued a flood alert for six major rivers across the country, warning that the risk of flash flooding will remain high until Wednesday.
According to the department, water levels are expected to rise in the East Rapti, Bagmati, Mahakali, Karnali, Bheri, and West Seti rivers. People living near riverbanks and low-lying areas have been urged to remain on high alert and take necessary precautions.
Although the Babai River had crossed its danger mark earlier in the day, conditions have since improved. Flood expert Binod Parajuli informed that the river peaked at 7.1 metres by midday—well above its danger level of 6.8 metres—but began to recede by 3 pm, dropping to 6.62 metres.
“While the Babai River is showing signs of stabilising, several smaller rivers flowing through Kavrepalanchok, Makwanpur, Dang, Banke, Chitwan, Kailali, and Kanchanpur continue to pose a significant risk of flash floods,” Parajuli said.
He added that early warning systems are actively disseminating information in high-risk areas to help communities prepare in time.
The department has advised residents and travellers in affected districts to stay alert, avoid riverbanks during periods of heavy rain, and follow updates from local authorities.
