East Bengal FC registered their consecutive win in the 2025 SAFF Women’s Club Championship after defeating Karachi City FC 2-0 at Dasharath Stadium in Kathmandu on Thursday.
In the first match of the day, East Bengal led early. A ground cross from Fazila Ikwaput found Sulanjana Paul just outside the 18-yard box, and capitalising on it, Paul shot the ball and gave the lead in the fifth minute.
While the Pakistani 2024 National Women Football Championship held the 2024-25 Indian Women’s League champions to a goal by the end of the first half, they failed in the second half.
Zeeyana Jivraj, the Karachi City goalie, tried passing to Samia Ouni, but Soumya Guguloth stole the ball. She tried a cross, but it was headed by Karachi City skipper Maria Jamila Khan, only to find Resty Nanziri near the far post to head it to the back of the net.
With the win, East Bengal, who defeated Transport United 4-0 in their first game, are at the top of the table with six points from two wins in two matches.
The home side, Nepal’s 2024 Women’s League Champions Armed Police Force (APF) Club had the chance to keep the top position to themselves. However, they dropped to the second position after playing a goalless draw with Bhutan’s Transport United in the second match on Thursday.
From the beginning to the end, APF had more than enough chances to score several goals, but they could not capitalise on them. There were even some easy chances which APF could not convert.
There is still a chance for the other teams to keep themselves alive in the race for the Top 2 position in the tournament played in a single round-robin format between five teams. The top two teams then compete for the title.
Karachi City and Transport United are placed third and fourth with two points from three matches each, while Nasrin Sports Academy from Bangladesh have one point with two more matches to play.
APF will face Karachi City in the first match on Sunday, while East Bengal will play Nasrin in the night match.
