Nepal’s women’s kabaddi team has secured a medal at the 20th Asian Games after beating Sri Lanka 34-24 to reach the semi-finals on Thursday in Nagoya, Japan.
Teams that reach the kabaddi semi-finals are guaranteed a medal, meaning Nepal will win at least a bronze, as it did at the 2023 Asian Games in Hangzhou, China.
Led by captain Manamati Bista, Nepal defeated Sri Lanka at the Tokai Citizen Gymnasium.
Nepal made a slow start but led 19-13 at half-time. The team struggled in raids but was strong in defence, where it picked up crucial points.
Nepal scored 14 points through opponents being put out, two bonus points, two from all-outs and one from super tackles.
Nepal added 15 points in the second half, while Sri Lanka managed 11.
Nepal had earlier beaten Thailand 46-43 in its opening match before losing 37-18 to Chinese Taipei.
Sri Lanka lost 40-28 to Thailand and 37-18 to Chinese Taipei in its first two matches.
Karateka Tenzing Sherpa won Nepal’s first medal at the 20th Asian Games, beating Laos’ Xayasan Vatthana 9-1 in the repechage at the Toyohashi Gymnasium on Wednesday.
