The Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) has taken disciplinary action against cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane for comments made on social media regarding the quality of Nepali umpiring during the Jay Trophy.
CAN spokesperson Chhumbi Lama stated that Sandeep was penalised under Article 2.7 of the players’ code of conduct, which prohibits public comments about CAN, ACC, ICC, players, match officials, or teams. As a result, Sandeep has been banned from participating in one game organised by CAN.
Sandeep had expressed concerns on Facebook, writing:
“I shouldn’t be saying this, but the standard of umpiring in Nepal needs significant improvement. It has remained stagnant for a long time, and if necessary steps are not taken, countless players may continue to suffer due to incorrect decisions in the future.”
He complained that the referee did not heed the captain's report though it was properly channelled.
“We provide the captain’s report to the referee, yet I don’t see any changes happening. Enhancing the quality of umpiring is crucial for the fair growth of the game and the development of players. Hopefully, the concerned authorities will take notice and work towards necessary improvements,” Sandeep said.
