Army clinch team championship title
The departmental team win 20 gold, nine silver and seven bronze medals to top the swimming medal chart.Sports Bureau
Tribhuvan Army Club added four gold medals and clinched the team championship title in swimming claiming a total of 20 gold medals at the Ninth National Games in Pokhara on Tuesday.
The departmental team also bagged nine silver and seven bronze medals.
Non Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) secured second position at the pool with nine gold, six silver and seven bronze medals. APF finished third bagging three gold, four silver and six bronze medals.
Province 1 claimed two gold, three silver and one bronze medals. Nepal Police Club earned one gold, eight silver and 10 bronze medals. Bagmati finished without gold, winning four silver and 10 bronze medals.
Among eight golds on offer on the final day at the pool, Army swimmer Duana Lama claimed top finishes in three categories including a team gold. Alexander Shah claimed the top finish in two events.
Army team, comprising Lama, Shah, Nasir Yahya Hussain and Gaurika Singh, claimed mixed 400m relay gold, clocking 3 minutes 53.12 seconds. Lama also secured women’s 400m freestyle gold with a timing of 4:43.92. She also added women’s 100m breaststroke gold at 1:16.63.
The 16-year-old Lama is the most successful swimmer at the Games, winning the highest nine golds and one silver that also included five national records.
Ashish Sapkota of NRNA secured men’s 200m butterfly and 400m individual medley golds. Sapkota clocked 2:09.45 in 200m butterfly and 4:35.33 in 400m individual medley. Ashley Sapkota added another gold for NRNA winning women’s 50m freestyle gold recording 27.89 seconds.
Army’s Gaurika Singh finished behind Ashley taking 28.29 for silver while Anushiya Tandukar of the same departmental team finished with bronze at 28.79.
Army swimmer Alexander Shah secured men’s 50m freestyle gold clocking 23.87 while Police’s San Bahadur Ragubanshi and Nepal Armed Police Force (APF) Club’s Tenzing Namdek Rayan Gurung walked away with silver and bronze medals, respectively.
Finishing behind Army in the mixed 400m relay, Police’s team of Arya Maharjan, Meghan Gurung, Gaurab Lama and Ragubanshi secured silver while Bagmati’s team of Irvin Shrestha, Rosha Neupane, Tisha Maharjan and Siran Singh took bronze.
In the men’s 100 breaststroke, Province 1’s Bikash Kumal won gold taking 1:07.53, Army’s Hussain (1:08.46) bagged silver and NRNA’s Sapkota (1:08.80) clinched silver.
