Army top boxing medal tally
The departmental team claim five gold and two silver medals in men’s and three gold and two silver medals in women’s categories in national boxing championships.Sports Bureau
Tribhuvan Army Club claimed both men's and women's team titles at the Bir Ganesh Man Singh Memorial National Boxing Championships at Basantapur Dabali in Kathmandu on Saturday.
The men's team of the departmental giants claimed five golds and two silvers while the women's team wrapped up the campaign with three gold and two silver medals. Army boxer Indra Sunar was declared the best male player while Armed Police Force (APF) Club’s Saraswati Rana was named best female pugilist. They won a two-wheeler each.
Sunar edged APF’s Puran Rai to win men's 57 kg gold. Shambhu Rajbanshi of Nepal Police Club and Saugat Kumal of Gandaki Province won bronze medals.
APF's Rana clinched the gold medal in women's 75 kg weight category defeating Niru Gurung of Army. Trisha Limbu of Province 1 and Puja Gupta of Madhes Province took home bronze medals.
The 13th South Asian Games gold medal winners trio—Bhupendra Thapa Magar and Sanil Shahi of Nepal Police Club and Minu Gurung of Army—lived up to expectations winning gold medals in their respective bouts.
Thapa Magar edged Puran Sunuwar in the men's 63 kg final. APF's Sonam Karki and Lumbini's Anil Pun Magar earned bronze medals.

Gurung claimed the gold medal in women's 51 kg section, overpowering Deewana Sherma of Police in the final. Sanju Maya Thing of APF and Maya Khatri of Lumbini took bronze.
The men's 52 kg final saw Army's Prem Chaudhary overcome Pradip Maharjan of APF. Chandra Bahadur Thapa of Police and Madan Krishna Magar of Police were joint third.
In the 75 kg division, Dipesh Lama of Army edged Sanam Gurung of Province 1 in the gold medal clash. Koshis Shrestha of Madhes and Dil Raj Bhandari of Karnali were third.
Army's Dipak Shrestha eased past Shyam Bahadur Mahato of Sudurpaschim in the 81 kg final. Prasang Limbu Ijam of Province 1 and Roshan Syangtan of Bagmati became third.
The men's 91 kg division final saw Ganesh Pradhan of Army beat Rabin Nepal of APF. Prasis Ruchal of Province 1 and Kiran BK of Gandaki were joint third.
In women's 51 kg category, Chandrakala Thapa of Army bagged gold, defeating Nisha Tamang of Police. Nangja Budha Magar of APF and Sushmita Rai of Province 1 walked away with bronze.
Sangita Dangol of Army was the winner in the women's 60 kg division. Dangol topped Sangita Sunar of APF in the summit clash while Narika Rai of Province 1 and Sashikala Rai were joint third.
Binita Thapa Magar of APF took home women's 69 kg gold defeating Punam Rawa of Army. Aparajita Gotani of Madhes and Junmaya Tharu of Lumbini earned bronze medals.
The top three finishers of men's and women's categories were rewarded with a purse of Rs25,000, Rs15,000 and Rs7,500 each.
Nepali Congress leader Srijana Singh, the organising committee coordinator Sanjeeb Tuladhar, tournament coordinator Rajiv Shrestha among others distributed prizes to the winners.
The five-day event organised by Bir Ganesh Man Singh Sports Committee featured 102 players from 10 teams in seven men's and five women's weight divisions.
