Tamang clinches Surya Nepal Western Open
The SAG twin gold medallist records a four-stroke win over pro Shrestha for his second career title.

Amateur Subash Tamang registered a four-stroke victory over pro Jayram Shrestha to clinch the Surya Nepal Western Open at the par-68 Himalayan Golf Course in Pokhara on Friday.
Tamang, the 2019 South Asian Games (SAG) twin gold medallist, carded one-over 69 for the second day in a row for a 54-hole total of even-par 204 to bag his second career title. He had also won the Surya Nepal Challenge in March 2019.
Shrestha played a card of four-over 72 in the final round for the total of four-over 208 and received the winner's cash prize of Rs135,000 as Tamang was not eligible to collect cash prize due to his amateur status.
Dhana Bahadur Thapa, Niraj Tamang and Rame Magar were overall third at seven-over 211 and they shared the second position among pros. The trio earned Rs68,834 each. Thapa carded three-over 71, Niraj two-over 70 and Magar produced the best card of the day, playing two-under 66.
Local Ajit BK finished second in the amateur section and sixth overall with a total of nine-over 213 with a card of three-over 71. Suresh Tamang was a distant third at 221.
Sanjay Lama (73) was fifth among pros at 214 and he walked away with Rs45,000. Top pro Bhuwan Nagarkoti (73) was sixth at 215 and won Rs40,000, Dinesh Prajapati (75) finished seventh and won Rs36,000. Rabi Khadka was eighth at 220. He played two-over 70 and he earned Rs 33,000. Bal Bhadra Rai was ninth at 221 and won Rs31,000 while local pro Bhu Bahadur Gurung was 10th at 224. He took away Rs29,000.
Winner Tamang played two-over 35 in the front nine and carded one-under 34 in the back nine. Shrestha played three-over 36 in the front nine and added one-over 36 in the back nine for his worst round of the tournament. He carded an even-par 68 in the first two rounds.
Altogether 39 players — 25 pros and 14 amateurs — took part in the 54-hole tournament organised by Nepal Professional Golfers Association under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd. The fifth event under the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2021-22 carried a cash purse of Rs775,000.
Nepal Golf Association president Tashi Ghale, Surya Nepal regional manager Prakash KC, and Nepal Police AIG Hari Bahadur Pal distributed the prizes to the winners.
The tournament will conclude with the Pro-Am event on Saturday.
