Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli on Tuesday said that the government was ready to provide for the sporting needs so that Nepali sportspersons make their mark at the international level.
"A sportsperson normally loses when he lacks proper training. A good coach, latest technology and sports equipment are key to success. The government is ready to fulfil all such needs. But we are not in a state to provide luxury," said Oli at an interaction titled Prime Minister with Sports organised by the National Sports Council.
Congratulating Nepali sports for historic success in the 13th South Asian Games held in December 2019 where Nepal made a record haul of 51 gold medals and finished second behind India in the standings, Oli said, "We need not be satisfied with this and can go miles ahead though the achievement in the Games was historic. The two dimensions of sports are preparation for competitive sports and talent hunt."
Arguing that investing in sports was not unproductive, Oli said, "Sports has its own unique production and the investment in sports is not wasted. Sports is vital for both physical and mental aspects."
Oli also assured of increased budget for sports and the government would play a supportive role for the development of sports in the post Covid-19 era. "Every sector has been hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and sports was no exception to it. But we are in the recovery phase and the government would provide full fledged support for the recovery of the sports sector."
Responding to the concern of NSC employees who have expressed dissatisfaction over their stalled promotions for more than two decades, Oli directed Sports Minister Dawa Lama Tamang, who also attended the function, to present a complete report to him.
Oli also assured that the government would construct a volleyball covered hall in the next two years.
