Two swimming national records were set on the final day of the eighth National Games in Nepalgunj as Gaurika Singh added four titles to take her medal tally to 12 gold.
Singh of Tribhuvan Army Club won the women’s 200m individual medley gold in a new national record time of 2:32.00 while Sayed Hamza Sha of Nepal Police Club also won the men’s 200m individual medley gold with a new national record of 2:17.19. It was the fourth event in which Singh set national record here. Singh also set national records in 100m butterfly, 50m backstroke and 100m freestyle.
While Singh won the women’s 200m gold, her teammate Duana Lama claimed silver in 2:36.59 and Tisa Shakya of APF won bronze in 2:49.87. Singh’s next three gold medals on Wednesday came in women’s 50m freestyle, 100m backstroke and 4x100 freestyle relay.
Singh clocked 27.59 to win the 50m freestyle gold, finishing ahead of her Army teammate Sofia Shah (28.94) and Tisa (29.43). The 16-year-old, who lives in London with her parents and only arrive in Nepal just for the Games, then added the third gold in 100m backstroke with the timings of 1:07.22. Duana finished in silver place with the timings of 1:19.69 and Anushka Pokharel ended up in bronze with the timings of 1:21.08. Singh teamed up with Sofia, Upaasti Maharjan and Duana to clinch the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay gold in 4:21.41. NPC claimed silver and APF bronze medal in the event. Singh won all 12 events she entered in the eighth National Games.
The men’s 200m IM saw top three swimmers all broke the previous national record held by Sirish Gurung, which was set at 2:26.17. Hamza Shah clocked 2:17.19 to win the gold while silver medallist Nathan Dorje Sherpa timed 2:21.31. Bronze winner Anubhav Subba clocked 2:23.22.
Army swimmer Alex Shah, meanwhile, claimed the men’s 50m freestyle gold with the timings of 25.26. Hamza Shah finished in silver place finishing the event in 25.96, comfortable ahead of bronze winner Armyman Anubhav, who clocked 26.22. Nathan Dorje Sherpa clinched the men’s 100m backstroke title with the timings of 1:04.06. Tenzing Namdol Ryan Gurung won silver in 1:09.53 and Nasir Hussain claimed bronze in 1:10.97. Both the swimmers represents APF club.
Hamza teamed up with Dipankar Awale, Tarun Bhandari and Gaurab Lama to win men’s 4x100m freestyle relay gold. The NPC team timed 4:01.09 to win title. Army club won silver in 4:01.69 and APF won bronze in 4:04.47. The four-day swimming meet offer a total of 34 gold medals. In all, 11 new national records were set in the Games.
