Nepal wrapped up their AFC U-23 Championship Qualifier campaign finishing bottom of the table after losing 2-0 to Afghanistan in their last group match at the Doha Sports City on Tuesday.
The outcome meant Nepal finished last in Group ‘A’ without earning single point, unable to produce a single goal in three matches. Nepal had lost 1-0 to Oman in their opening match on Friday before going down 5-0 against the hosts Qatar on Sunday in the four-team group. Nepal conceded a total of eight goals. Suliman Shah Khorami gave a 24th minute lead to Afghanistan before Ahmad Haydary scored the second in the 34th to end their campaign with a victory. Coming into the match the Afghans had lost 2-0 to Qatar and 2-1 to Oman.
The other match of the group saw host Qatar hold Oman to a 2-2 draw and finish on top of the table. The result meant both Qatar and Oman finished on seven points each but the hosts qualified for the finals by the virtue of superior goal difference. Nepal had never moved beyond the Qualifier stage of the biennial tournament which started in 2012.
The win over South Asian rivals Bangladesh in the 2012 Qualifier is the best result Nepal have ever achieved. Nepal had registered 4-1 win over Bangladesh. Nepal had also finished the last two editions at the bottom of the table without scoring a single goal.
