Dahal, Dhami ease to singles quarter-finals

Young gun Prince Dahal of Silk Group recorded wins in three separate category matches in the 15th Krishna Mohan Memorial National Open Badminton Championships at the APF headquarters court in Halchowk on Tuesday.
Dahal eased to a 21-11, 21-7 win over Diwas Shankar of Tribhuvan Army Club (TAC) to enter the men’s singles quarter-finals. He also beat Sudhan Tamang of Dhanwantary 21-6, 21-5 in the U-17 boys’ singles match before teaming up with Nir Bikram Devkota of APF to defeat Niranjan Devkota and Purna Bahadur Thapa 21-14, 17-21, 21-18 in the men’s doubles match.
Five APF shuttlers—Dipesh Dhami, Gautam Singh Kathayat, Sudeep Sedai, Sunil Joshi and Sajan Krishna Tamrakar—joined Dahal in the men’s singles quarter- finals were Gautam 0. Praful Maharjan of TAC and Jeevan Acharya of Nepal Police Club (NPC) also made it to the last eight.
Dhami beat his APF clubmate Pemba Sherpa 22-20, 21-11, Kathayat rallied to a 19-21, 21-13, 22-20 win over Deepak Bohara of NPC, Sedai saw off Niranjan Devkota of APF 21-17, 12-21, 21-19, Joshi defeated Bishnu Katwal of NPC 21-16, 18-21, 21-14, Tamrakar got the better of his clubmate Nir Bikram Devkota 23-21, 21-15, Maharjan dispatched Bijit Thapa Magar of APF 27-25, 21-14 and Acharya overcame Rukesh Maharjan of TAC 24-22, 21-8, 21-13.
APF duo Shova Gauchan and Jessica Gurung along with Sima Rajbanshi of Morang also won their respective women’s singles matches. Gauchan survived a second set debacle to beat Samjhana Sharma of Banke 21-18, 21-23, 21-13, Gurung eased past Manisha Khadka of Zest 21-11, 21-7 while Rajbanshi battled to a 21-9, 17 -21, 21-18 win over Sita Rai of Bhojpur.
In the U-17 boys’ singles matches, Prakash Chand of Mahendranagar saw off Rohit Baral of Kapilvastu 21-10, 21-11, Priyanshu Singh Chhetri of APF beat Bhoj Bahadur Gurung of Itahari 21-16, 21-8 and Amrit Chaudhary of Dhangadhi overcame Sanjeev Bhandari of Kanchanpur 21-7, 21-18. Also in the U-17 boys’ matches, Ujjwal Pokharel of Morang defeated Narendra Bam of Surkhet 21-16, 23-21, Pemba Sherpa of APF got the better of Saurav Bam Thakuri of Mahendranagar 21-11, 21 -11, Gokul Jora of Kanchanpur dispatched Anish Khatiwada of Bara 21-6, 21-11 and Diwash Shankar of TAC overcame Abhiyan Kashyap of Tokha 21-5, 21-5.
In the U-17 girls’ category, Nita Lamshal of Morang defeated Sambhabi Palk Singh of Dhanwantary 21-11, 21-13, Anjana Rai of Jhapa beat Bidhya Khadka of Zest Badminton Academy 21-6, 21-10 and Smriti Rai of Birgunj saw off Prekchhya Rai of Dhanwantary 21-13, 21-18.
Dipesh Dhami and Bijeet Thapa Magar teamed up to beat Manoj Dagaura and Bijay Baniya 21-12, 21-16 in the men’s doubles match. Other winners in the men’s doubles category included Bishal Pradhan-Bimal Shrestha, Deepak Bohara-Jeevan Acharya, Suman Limbu-Jopseph Adhikari, Sunil Joshi-Gautam Singh Kathayat, Sudeep Sedai-Sajan Krishan Tamrakar and Praful Maharjan-Suraj Maharjan.
The tennis tournament features events in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles, mixed doubles, U-19 boys’ and girls’ apart from age-group competition for veterans. In all, 287 shuttlers are taking part in the tournament organised in memory of late APF Inspector General Krishna Mohan Shrestha.
Meanwhile, Prerana Koirala and Ganga Sharma set the women’s singles title clash of the 11th Sahabir Memorial Open Lawn Tennis tournament on Tuesday. Koirala eased past Saloni Tamang 6-4, 6-3 and Shamar beat Bhagawati BK 6-2, 6-2 in the semi-finals. Pranab Khanal beat Anil Shahi 6-2, 6-2 and Ivanhoe Lissanevitch saw off Samyak Bajracharya 6-1, 6-4 in the men’s singles quarter-finals.
