Paul Pogba scored a late goal to give France a 2-1 victory over Australia in the Group C match in Kazan.
France had taken the lead through a penalty after Antoine Griezmann was fouled by Josh Risdon. Griezmann converted the penalty in the 58th minute. The penalty was awarded by the video assistant referee (VAR), the first World Cup goal given by VAR.
But a handball by Samuel Umititi gave Mile Jedinak the chance to equalize through another penalty of the game in the 62 minute.
Australia looked on course for a draw against the favorites but Pogba’s effort in the 80th minute ensured France started their campaign with a victory.
