Sandeep was added to a star-studded World XI side which will be led by England skipper Eoin Morgan for the match against the Windies scheduled for May 31 at the iconic Lord’s cricket ground in London. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is holding the match to raise funds to redevelop the stadia in the Caribbean that were damaged by hurricanes last year.
The World XI also includes Pakistan allrounder Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Malik, India’s Dinesh Karthik and Hardik Pandya, New Zealand’s Luke Ronchi and Mitchell McClenaghan, Bangladesh’s Tamim Iqbal, Sri Lanka’s Thisara Perera and Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan. Sandeep said it hardly matters even if he doesn’t get a chance in the playing XI.
“We often rush towards conclusion. It doesn’t matter if I don’t get the opportunity in the playing XI. To be named in the World XI side in itself is an honour for me. We have to keep patience and if we are deserving enough, opportunity will definitely come to us,” Sandeep said at the TU grounds ahead of his departure on Tuesday.
Sandeep recently enjoyed global limelight with an impressive performance in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for Delhi Daredevils. He took five wickets in the last three matches for Delhi with an economy of 6.83. He was particularly lauded for showing the calmness and maturity against some of the world class batsmen at cricket’s toughest stage while bowling the first overs.
The 17-year old leg spinner said it was another opportunity to prove himself. “There is a big difference playing in the IPL and representing a World XI side. Obviously it is a big game for me and if I get a chance to play, I will get another platform to prove myself,” added Sandeep.
