Prakash Danuwar of Eastern Region shattered a 16-year-old school-level record in boy’s 400-metre sprint during the final day of President’s Running Shield at the Dashrath Stadium on Saturday.

Danuwar clocked 50.20 seconds to break Krishna Mahato’s mark of 52.8 set in 2001 during the Birendra Shield, the sports meet for school children then. Bhuwan Mahato of Central and Sandip Chaudhary of Western Region finished with silver and bronze medals. In the girl’s 400m, Anita Bhool of Far Western Region secured gold in 1:07.25 min. Kalpana Shrestha of West and Kajal Bista of Central bagged silver and bronze medals. 

Central Region defended the team championship with a total of 293 points. Central earned 167 points from athletics, 56 from kabbadi and 70 from volleyball. Besides these three, the event featured five other games: karate, wushu, taekwondo, cricket and football—which do not fetch points for the winners. West (264 points), Mid West (215 points) wrapped up in second and third positions. 

The boy’s triple jump saw Bhuwan Mahato of Central win gold with a jump of 13.23-metre. He finished ahead of Sushil KC of Midwest and Nir Kumar Rana of Farwest. In the girl’s long jump, Bipana Pariyar of West secured gold with a jump of 10.56-metre. Devika Pal of Farwest and Puja Chaudhary of Midwest ended in second and third respectively.  

Birendra Chaudhary of Central earned gold in boy’s javelin throw with a haul of 45.65-metre ahead of Ramesh Pokharel of Farwest and Santaram Majhi of Central. Khageshwari Thagunne of Far West captured gold in girls javelin throw covering a distance of 25.19-metre. Sunita Thapa of West and Elina Khadka of Central walked away with silver and bronze medals.  

The women’s 200m gold went to Jayrani Tharu of Midwest who clocked 24.44sec to finish ahead of 100m champion Lujala Amatya of Central. Neha Chaudhary of East was restricted to bronze medal. Midwest dominated the 4x400m relay, sweeping gold in both boys’ and girls’ sections. Central and Farwest walked away with boys silver and bronze medals. Farwest won silver and Central bronze in the girls’ event.

The three-day athletics event saw four athletes script five records in boys’ categories. Ajit Kumar of Central rewrote two records in 1,500m and 3,000m, Nishan Gurung of West in boys’ shot-put, Bhuwan Mahato of Central in long jump and Dunuwar of Eastern in 400m running.   

West claimed the boys’ volleyball title and Central bagged the girls’ championship. West collected 12 points with an unbeaten record in the round robin league. Central and Midwest finished second and third in boys’ category. Girls’ champion Central accumulated 12 points. 

Midwest won the boys’ football title and Central clinched the girls’ championship. A goal each for Dipen Singh Thakuri and Hemraj Raut guided Midwest to 2-0 win over Central in boy’s final. In the girl’s category, Central thumped Western 4-1 in the final. Rashmi Ghising scored twice for the winning team.

Western bagged the boys kabbadi championship and Farwest earned the girls’ kabbadi title. Both the teams earned 12 points while Central ended up in second in both boys and girls’ categories. Western won the boys’ cricket championship with an eight-wicket win over Eastern Region. Eastern were bundled up for 84 runs in the Twenty20 event and Western overcame the total for the loss of two wickets in 12.3 overs.
