Shrestha carded a four-over 76 in the fourth and final round on Thursday for a total score of 14-under 274 but it was still good enough to beat Surya Prasad Sharma and Sanjay Lama by three strokes.
At one stage, Shrestha appeared set to hand Sharma the title after squandersing a five-stroke lead in his error-prone game. But his cause was helped by Sharma, who had triple bogeys in the 15th and 17th holes, as the momentum shifted back. It was the sixth title for Shrestha in the eighth and final tournament of the Surya Nepal Golf Tour 2016-17. The win extended Shrestha’s career title to 36 and he pocketed Rs 220,000.
Sharma had opened up a two-stroke lead over fellow RNGC pro Shrestha after nine holes and extended it to three shots with a birdie on the 10th. But his triple bogeys on the 15th and 17th holes allowed Shrestha to come back into game. Sharma finished the day at two-over 74 and Lama carded shot one-under 71 to share the second palce at 11-under 277. Both pros earned Rs 112,000 apiece.
Army Club pro Dhana Bahadur Thapa (77) finished in fourth at two-under 286 and got Rs 74,000, while home club pro Bhuwan Nagarkoti (73) finished fifth at 287 and received Rs 65,000.
Jayaram Shrestha ended up in sixth at two-over 290 and received Rs 60,000, while Rajendra Thapa Magar finished in seventh at 292 to earn Rs 55,000. Tirtha Poudel and Rabi Khadka shared eighth place at 293, while Rame Magar and Bal Bhadra Rai finished tied for 10th at 294.
Sukra Bahadur Rai (77) of Dharan lifted the amateur trophy with the score of 293. Tanka Bahadur Karki (77) finished second at 299 and Vijay Shrestha Einhaus (75) in third at 300. In all, 48 golfers—36 pros and 12 amateurs—took part in the tournament organised by Nepal Professional Golfers Association. The lucrative event offered Rs 1.2 million in cash prize. The golf season ends with a Pro-Am event on Friday.
