Katiyar defeated overnight leader and compatriot Niladri Shekhar Bhattacharya to claim the title on Direct Encounter system. After the completion of ninth and final round, Katiyar and Bhattacharya were tied on 7.5 points each. The win made Katiyar richer by Rs 100,000.
Bhattacharya took home Rs 50,000. The Indian players dominated the top five spots with Sarbojit Paul finishing third on tiebreak after he was tied with countrymen Santu Mandal and Ritwan Sunatra on seven points. Paul, Mandal and Sunatra got Rs 35,000, Rs 25,000 and Rs 20,000 respectively.
Nepal player Rijendra Rajbhandari, Sajin Maharjan, India’s Tamal Chakraworty, Nepal’s Chhitiz Bhandari and Ashutosh Kumar, another Indian player, rounded up in the top 10 positions with six points each. They got Rs 12,000 each.
Anish Kumar Subedi of India and Aditya M made top two finish among the unrated. Recently crowned women’s national champion Sindira Joshi was the best among the women. Bibek Shrestha was the best local player ahead of Om Lal Maharjan. Kanti Lal Dube of India finished first among the veterans.
A total of 80 players from Nepal, India and Bangladesh had participated in the
five-day event played under Swiss League format for over nine rounds.
