Nepali swimmer Gaurika Singh set a new national record in women’s 200m backstroke during the Irish Open Swimming Championships in Dublin on Saturday.
Held at the National Aquatic Centre, Gaurika clocked 2:25.99 to beat her own previous national record of 2:26.93 which she had set during the 12th South Asian Games in February in India. The record came a day after the 14-year-old London-based Nepali swimmer set 100m freestyle national record with the timings of 1:1.78 at the meet.
In February, Singh became the first Nepali swimmer to clinch a medal in individual event at the SA Games. In fact, she stunned all by only becoming the first Nepali swimmer to achieve the milestone but went a step further by clinching four medals including a silver medal in 200m individual medley. She also struck bronze in 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle.
Singh is regularly training at the Barnet Copthall Swimming Club in London for the last three years.
